Composite (single connector, lowest quality). There are four popular video connections: (RCA connectors need a special cable with RCA on one end and XLR on the other.)ĭVD decks may have XLR connections, but AES/EBU connections will also work. Either of these deliver the highest quality audio, with no hum or buzz added to it. XLRs connect directly into the digitizing device, which I’ll cover shortly.

RCA connectors are more popular, but tend to be noisy – especially when the length of the cable is more than a few inches. XLR connectors use shielding to prevent hum and noise from entering the audio signal. Still, XLR connectors provide higher-quality (i.e. They tend not to have high-end connectors. VHS decks were designed as consumer gear. As well, you need to look at each step and make sure you are maintaining quality.

Quality starts at the beginning of the chain, not salvaged at the end.
#Sony dv cam digitize tapes mac video format pro#
I have a 2013 Mac Pro and plenty of storage. What hardware do you advise so I can get the best quality. Apologies if these are obvious questions even the few times I've dealt with tape it's always been HD footage.I need to convert old VHS and personal DVDs to digital files that I can edit in Final Cut or Premiere. Is this a good way to do it or am I just as well capturing the SD media within my "Master" HD project and using a DNHD codec? I'm just trying to preserve the original look of the footage as far as possible. Would it be to use a thunderbolt -> Firewire adapter and then get a Firewire 800 -> Firewire 400 (4pin) cable to attach the camera? Or should I get one of these USB -> Composite/S-video adapters? Or is there another, better option?Ģ) Does anyone have a recommended Avid SD Codec to use on capture?ģ) Lastly, once my MXFs were created, I was then going to bring them in to my "Master" HD project. However, this is the first time I've had to do this since I worked in a facility and I don't have a DV deck so I'm wondering the best way to connect the camera to my 2014 Macbook Pro.

I have a couple of questions about workflow and I wondered if anyone could help?ġ) My intention was to set up an SD project and use the capture tool to ingest the SD media from the DVcam. At these points the aspect ration will go 4:3 so we'll have verticle black bars. I'm about to start work on a 25fps project that will predominantly be HD, but will have some Sony PD150 footage recorded on to MiniDV for a change of tone.
